Lightwell
A home defined by light, drawn deep into its core to shape space, movement and the experience of living within it.
Where Light Shapes Living
Location: Kew, VIC | Architect: Walter Walter | Photographer: Ben Hoskins
This Kew project came through a trusted referral, after working with Eileen at “FiftyOne” and Eileen showing off her home to friends and family, the Builders of Architecture team were introduced to Nat and John and their unrenovated home in Kew. This evolved into a collaboration defined by bold design and technical precision. Designed by Walter Walter, the home explores light, form and volume through complex geometry and carefully considered detailing.
From the central skylight to the sculpted roof forms, each element was resolved to maximise natural light and spatial experience. The result is a home that feels dynamic, refined and deeply connected to its design intent.
A Light Filled Kew Home
With a 15-meter skylight travelling trough the centre of the home and roof shapes seen in origami more often than a home, it tested our team when computing the set outs. More light comes over the kitchen with the glass directly above following a 30-degree pitch on the cathedral roof. The joinery being put to multiple uses, as used as ways to separate spaces and kitchen storage and appliance cupboard which gives the house another dimension. The use of colour-bond cladding and lots of windows provides low maintenance and tons of reflected light making this home truly light up.
- 15 metre skylight and complex roof forms required precise set out and coordination
- Cathedral ceiling with angled glazing enhances light through key living spaces
- Multi functional joinery defines zones while integrating storage and appliances
